The Four Juiciest Secrets - Call Recording and Handouts

Living_magically The response to my call last week has been truly incredible. I promised that the content would be life-changing, and it was.

For those of you who missed it and would like to hear it, you'll find the details below together with the handout that you may well want to use to take notes in a useful and structured way.

But first a selection of feedback we received after the call, whose authors have kindly agreed for their comments to be published:

“Dearest Karen – I just wanted to personally thank you for last night’s call.  After I got off, I made a decision to quit my job of 12 years and devote myself full-time to my company, Rite Food and Company.  I’ve been trying to run my company part-time for months now and have been really struggling... mainly because I was pushing back/ denying/ silencing my ‘inner voice’.  Thank you for reminding me that I’m powerful beyond my wildest dreams.” ~ Lisa Marie Lindenschmidt, Rite Food and Company, New Gloucester, Maine, USA

“Hi Karen, you are amazing....your breakdown was actually your breakthrough.  You have changed my raw food journey. Thank you from my entire green heart, mind, body and soul...a true convert.” ~ Reina Ocasio, New York, USA

That recording is a gem, a masterpiece, or mistresspiece, it is awesome.  I'm on the net a lot, for over 12 yrs, and that is one of the very best things I ever, ever experienced by way of the net.  You are real, you are truly concerned, you have something of value to contribute, you are willing to put it out there, you are speaking from the truth of your being, you are a pioneer in life, in raw, in marketing, in being love - thank you.  I’m so happy to see you sold out, as is appropriate.  I know that your contribution will be returned to you multiplied.  Thank you; know that you have made a difference in lives all over the planet that will then touch others and others and others, wow - just wow!” ~ Dr. Dianne Jennings, Costa Rica

How to Spread the *RAW* Word in a Way That's Right For YOU!

World_2 If you’ve been into raw food for a while – or even a little while, actually – it’s not unusual to become so excited about what you’re learning and discovering for yourself that you want to tell the world!

Yes, we all know that feeling, right?

Well, those longer-termers among you will know that running around telling everyone how they "must go raw" is generally a recipe for disaster; it can alienate friends, family, colleagues and even partners if you don’t know how to share this right!

In the past 16 years of being a raw foodie if there’s one thing I’ve learned, both personally and professionally, it’s this: people have to want to go raw.

Think about it : )

Did anyone twist *your* arm into going raw? Did anyone try to twist your arm into going raw?

Have a think about that for a moment and see what pops. If this did happen to you, remember how it felt... How did you respond or react to it? Was it positively or negatively? I know many people who actually didn’t pursue a raw food journey because of the way the information was presented to them.

My experience suggests that for every 100 people who go raw, 98 go raw because they decide to, and it is their decision alone. (The other two tend to it because their partner coerced them or their health dictated it). This is a very important fact to bear in mind when you’re serious or keen to spread the word.

In this article I’m going to share with you a multitude of ways that you can be part of the change. Since I’m currently writing this article in one of the “raw food Meccas” of the world, LA, it’s certainly given me a revised perspective on what’s possible when like-minded people get together and start making things happen.

The good news is, you don’t have to live in “raw food central” or be part of a group to make things happen. That’s not where I live! I live on a farm in almost the middle of nowhere with no raw food friends to be found within a pretty large radius! (- Does that surprise you? It should inspire you!) You, like me, can be sitting in your own private corner of the Universe and still touch many many lives, but it’s a case of knowing that there’s certain ways that are more effective than others...

So, starting with the premise that “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink...” we’re going to look at ways you can promote in your own way but only to those who show interest : )

Are You Ready to Step Up to the Plate?

FAQ The following article is fron this week's issue of Successfully Raw. I'm publishing it here as there's an invitation at the end to take part in a one week tri-fold Raw Coaching Challenge. I'd love as many people to take part in this as possible and I'll be starting the ball rolling myself to give you an idea of how this might look.

So, if you're ready to Step Up to the Plate (or in some cases step away from it!!) and GROW over the next few weeks and months, but specifically during the next seven days then this is for YOU!

Being in the US this past week or so has been an amazing experience on so many levels. Have you ever planned for a trip or event and just known that everything was going to change for you, that something really big was going to happen? This is how I felt at the start of last week before I flew, I just didn’t know how it was going to show up.

Now here I am the day before I fly home and I want to catalyse the essence of what I have experienced to gracefully but powerfully challenge you to step up to the plate in your own world and do what you know you need to do.

Before we get into the big stuff, first some compassion ; )

I know first-hand that knowing you have more inside of you to birth than you are currently living out can feel painful. It feels painful l to stay smaller than you know you are and yet the thought of stepping out often scares the living daylights out of us! Yes, this is something I know only too well!

However, when you up your raw food game this ability to keep yourself back and smaller than who you really are ends up taking a LOT of energy, do you know what I mean?! It’s like a plant that wants to grow, that is destined to grow but uses every ounce of its energy to stop growing – which is actually a really hard, if not impossible thing to do!

Growth is nature’s way. It’s our destiny, our divine blueprint, our joy. It seems to be just us with our crazy mixed up beliefs and toxic heart and mind stuff that have a fear of being who we really are and not just growing but opening up and blossoming like the amazing creations we are.

Heart to Mouth: How to Deal with Those Raw Emotions

Originally published in Get Fresh! magazine December 2007:

Fruit_heartSo you know what to eat, but you’re still not doing it (and maybe you’re not even completely sure why…) or perhaps you’re more than well aware that your emotions are ruling your diet more than your head but you just can’t seem to break the pattern? Ready to ease the pain and get healthy? Karen Knowler clears the path…

Like the majority of the clients I work with, Susan (name changed), 41, had no problem at all sharing with me from the get-go that emotional eating was at the core of her weight and energy issues.

“I just can’t seem to help myself,” she sighed. “It doesn’t matter if my head is busy telling me it’s no good for me or that it will make me gain even more weight, in that moment I really don’t care. I’ll just open the fridge and wolf down whatever looks good at the time… and then of course I just feel fat and sick afterwards. It’s been going on for way too long now. I hate the way I look and feel. I’ve really had enough!”

While for Susan her reason for compulsive overeating was mostly around the loneliness she felt after her mother (also her best friend) unexpectedly moved away, for another client, Sarah, 35, her regular weekend binges were mainly around boredom and a general lack of life direction along with some emotional hangover from a long-term heartbreak that hadn’t been fully healed. For Miranda, 25, it was mostly about self-sabotage; quite simply she didn’t want to stop bingeing because dropping the excess weight would equal “slim”, and slim would mean being sexually attractive. Having been sexually abused as a teenager, slim was not something she therefore aspired to be and food had come to provide the perfect layer of protection – both emotionally and physically; this, to her mind at least, was guaranteed to keep her “safe”, a price she was willing to pay even if she didn’t necessarily love what she saw in the mirror. For Natasha, 32, something completely different again. For her it was all about fear – fear of people, fear of being seen and fear around any new experiences; as we delved deeper we discovered that essentially this came down to a fear of feeling fully alive in her own skin as well as fully engaging with life. By overeating on a daily basis, usually at night after dinner, she could keep very easily keep herself credibly occupied, thus finding herself “mysteriously” devoid of the time or energy required to engage with the world or to face any of those fears that were increasing steadily by the day. Why deal with our stuff when eating is so much easier?

I would estimate that at least 98% of the people I have worked with eat for emotional reasons, and I feel confident that this figure would be just as applicable to any group of people interviewed randomly on any street, in any town, on any day of the week, during any week of the year. Whether it’s for boredom, tiredness, lethargy, depression, sadness, grief or any other negative emotion you care to name, food has become, it seems, the universally applied band-aid for just about every emotional malady conceivable.
But why should this be so?

Many believe, myself included, that this almost unstoppable drive to “eat our pain away” all stems back to babyhood when, as soon as we cried – be it from hunger, tiredness, fear, isolation or whatever upset us at the time – we would automatically have a breast or bottle thrust into our cupid’s bow and all would suddenly be well in the world. Sweet, warm, creamy… Mmmm! Immediately transported, rescued and loved all in one magical, hypnotically dreamy move! When the world seems like a big scary place, to switch your focus completely towards the pleasures coming in, and having your basic human need of feeling “nourished” met instead (and certainly a lot of that nourishment would have come from the sense of close human contact rather than the actual milk), it’s not hard to see why this connection between food and comfort has become so tightly bound into our subconscious since as long as we can remember.

Of course, this “loving” approach to making it all better continued for all of us well beyond those first few months and all the way into and beyond toddler hood. As per infancy, if we hurt ourselves, were sad, lonely, bored, disgruntled, unaccountably blue or had had a bad day at school, then a hand-held trip to the sweet shop, or a “special treat” from the cupboard, fridge or freezer – whatever our issue might be, with a few hungry bites of our food of choice it would all soon be history and our problem solved. Well, for at least five minutes anyway.

In the light of this obviously it’s no wonder that almost all, if not entirely all of us have continued employing this coping pattern well on into adulthood where it has remained an almost automatic response that kicks in during times of stress, pain or worry. This seems to remain no matter who we are, how “evolved” we consider ourselves to be, or any other variable we may throw in to the mix. If we’re human and breathing, we’re very likely doing this to some degree on a fairly regular basis, whether we consciously realise it or not.
For clients coming to me with this issue, essentially of not knowing how NOT to eat for comfort, or indeed what to do instead, because of the niche I work within (raw foods coaching) I am usually gifted with the wonderfully useful head start of them having toyed with raw foods, even if only for a while, and this is how their awareness usually began. For many, just like me, until they tried to “go raw” they had no clue just how often they were eating for emotion, and so when they tried to repeat old patterns and quash their pain with an apple, banana or salad rather than with their usual comfort food of choice, it simply didn’t happen. At this point, as it did for Susan, it becomes abundantly clear: To create a truly happy, nurturing adult relationship with food, we have to find alternative genuinely uplifting and healing ways of getting our emotional needs met – because food never has and never will heal our pain; it can only, ultimately, increase it, along with our waistline.
So where on earth do we begin?

The Power of the Right Mentor

From Successfully Raw Issue 104:

Ultimate_raw_support_grpIf you've been struggling to go or stay raw then today I'd like to share with you one small but potentially VERY powerful tip that could make all the difference.

As the title suggests, we're talking about mentors here and to be clear this might be someone you actually work with or know, someone you learn from from afar via books, DVDs, podcasts etc, or someone who lives or has lived but you have never met and who greatly inspires you whether they have been prolific or not.

The power of having a great mentor, or mentors, cannot be overestimated. Usually people chosen as a mentor have a huge amount of experience in a particular area and totally walk the talk. They know as much about the lows as the highs, they know what they do inside out and when you think of them, see a picture of them or even meet them face to face they leave you feeling "wow", effectively showing you that there is so much further to go on your journey and inspiring you just by their very presence that it is worth pursuing your journey so you can be like they are, too.

In general, I recommend that every person chooses a different mentor for every area of their life. For example you might choose one for any or all of these: raw food, fitness, relationships, parenting, finances, personal or spiritual development - the list goes on. What's important is not that you choose a large number necessarily but that you choose the right ones for where you are right now and what really speaks to you and your desired goals or destination. Also know that as you evolve and progress in your own journey, your choice of mentor can and will change as you change - and that's a good thing. This way things can never get stale.

Today we are talking specifically about choosing the right raw food mentor, or mentors, and you can choose them for different areas. For example you might choose one to be your food teacher, someone whose recipes you love, you love the way they are in their kitchen, how simple/ delicious/ quick/ artistic/ impressive/ nutritious their recipes are. It would be great to have one of these wouldn't it? Well you can! You just need to be clear on your criteria first. While you could certainly choose more than one, I believe there is more power in singling one person out at a time and then giving full attention to learning from that person until you feel that you have outgrown them or what they teach is no longer relevant to you. This person could just as easily be a raw food friend as someone more high profile - that doesn't matter. What matters is that they inspire you to go to the next level and beyond and that what they have to share really excites and moves you.

What Do You Need To Believe?

So_you_want_to_go_raw_6This week's self-coaching article was recently published in Get Fresh! magazine.

If you’ve been struggling to go raw and stay raw, and you know it’s not really about the food, then this issue’s focus using powerful coaching exercises may just help shine some light on the source of some or even all of your issues.

NB: If you are happy with the amount of raw food you are eating then you can either skip this feature entirely or pull it out and keep for a time where there may be a discrepancy between your thoughts and behaviour.

So, if you’re ready to go, then in order to get the most out of the following exercises I’d like you to grab your a pen and paper or your computer and copy each question as I give it to you. Please only write and answer one question at a time and resist the urge to jump ahead as it could impact on the power of your results.

There are no such things as right or wrong answers here – only honest or dishonest, and you definitely need to be honest. Simply list anything and everything that comes to mind, and do not censor because the more open and honest you are, the more likely you are to discover the source of the problem. Ready to play?

20) Of all the negatives you listed around raw food which ones if they were to turn to their opposite (positive) would make the biggest difference?
21) Of all the positives you listed for cooked food, which ones if you could say they were also true for raw food would make a big difference?
22) If you had to give three words to sum yourself up if you went fully raw and your most beautiful vision came true, what would they be?

When you have answered the questions in full and feel happy with the depth you have gone to with each, read on for part one of a coaching case study that could help to shine light on what’s been going on for you.

Raw Food and Lonely? You're *Not* Alone!

From Successfully Raw Issue 100:

Raw_alone"Dear Karen, I really enjoy reading your eZine and especially the recipes. Here is my dilemma and I know I'm not the only one: no support. I don't think there are any groups that meet to give tips on how to survive a raw diet in a family that dislikes everything about it. That drags me down and then I don't feel like trying to eat healthy. Let's face it, it's easier to do as the Romans do than fight it. Any tips or suggestions? I know when I was strictly raw I felt absolutely fantastic!!"

Well, what a common question this is. I really do feel for anyone who is surrounded by negativity as this used to be my story too; not so much in my own home, mind you, but I have been around enough sceptics and naysayers to know that it ain't fun and it ain't often pretty.

So here follow a few of my tips, resources and practical ideas. These focus on the external; next week I shall address the internal. While there are certainly many more external options out there (which is why I am posting this article on my blog so those of you with additional ideas and resources please do post them here), this hopefully will give you enough to get going with. I hope they help...

The Importance of Envi-RAW-ment

From Successfully Raw Issue 97:

HomeHow much "raw support" have you got in your environment?

It's a good question, as one of the main areas that people fall down in is the day-to-day environment that they place themselves in.

To get the most out of this article and part two that follows in a few days I am going to ask that you open your mind to the possibility that you can create and/or secure any environment for yourself that you want. Now, I know for some this may seem more than a little tricky, if not impossible, but I am firm believer in "where there's a will there's a way" and in this arena I feel no exceptions - so bear with me as we begin our journey together...

But before we get to exploring that more fully, first of all I want and need to say that if you have been struggling to stay raw and it's NOT food related but circumstantial, emotional or environmental, then please (please) do not spend one more second beating yourself up for not staying on the wagon, because as you will see, if your environment - and that's inner and outer - is not set up to support you then really it is going to feel uphill all the way.

So let's first of all be clear on what environment is. As per the "7 Circles of Raw Support" coaching model that I use, I see environment as comprising of both inner and outer terrain, namely:

Sprouting: The Why, What and How To Do It Successfully!

From Successfully Raw Issue 92:

SproutingjarOne of the most popular modules on my Raw Food For Beginners classes is undoubtedly the sprouting teach-in.

Whether I am lucky, have unrecognised green fingers or what, I do not know, but it seems that many people have struggled and continue to struggle with sprouting seeds, beans, pulses and grains successfully, and after a couple of failed attempts tend to throw in the towel and write the whole idea off.

Nooooo!

Don't do it!

Sprouting absolutely has to be one of the very most important raw food "tools" you need to have in your toolbox if you want to be as lithe, gorgeous and energy-filled as you can possibly be (my already abundant energy probably doubles when I bring sprouts into my daily diet). There's a LOT to be said for these apparently "insignificant" little creatures, and to ignore or exclude them from your diet is, in my humble opinion, one of the biggest mistakes you can possibly make.

So in my bid to have you sprouting successfully all over your kitchen, here follows my fool-proof guide to sprouting using my own personal favourite method, the jar.

What is sprouting?
Sprouting is an alternative term for germinating, although the sprouting process goes a little beyond basic germination and results in a partially grown or young plant. In a raw food kitchen we’re looking specifically at the sprouting of a nut, seed, bean or grain in order to render it edible or more easily digestible. Nuts do not need to be sprouted to make them edible, nor do some seeds but both benefit from soaking and sprouting as they become more easily digestible and juicier as a result. Other seeds, i.e. those that are supposed to be sprouted, plus all beans, pulses and legumes (with the exception of peanuts) need to be sprouted if they are to be eaten raw. Kidney beans should never be eaten raw and should be avoided. Grains should also be soaked and sprouted, although dry oats are an exception and can be milled down and used to make cookies successfully without being sprouted first. The sprouting process begins in water in your very own kitchen.

Why sprout?
When a seed, bean, nut or grain is soaked in water for a period of time, the plant’s enzyme inhibitors are removed. These enzyme inhibitors prevent a plant from germinating unless the right conditions for growth are met, and so once the seed comes into contact with water and the enzyme inhibitors are washed away the germination process begins. This process sets into action a whole chain of reactions enabling the plant to grow at a rapid rate. As it does so the vitamin content increases dramatically, to the point where the sprouted seed can contain hundreds or thousands times more vitamins than it did previously, and the protein, carbohydrates and fats begin to break down into a pre-digested form making for easier and better digestion and assimilation overall. The enzyme content of each seed, been, nut or grain also sky rockets making sprouts one of the most enzyme-rich (i.e. live) foods on the planet.

What do I need to sprout?
You don’t need any fancy equipment to get sprouting, although there are many pieces of equipment available to help you such as jars, trays, bags and even automatic sprouting kits. To get started you’ll need some seeds or beans for sprouting, a container to sprout them in such as a jam jar, and something to drain the water through, like a sieve or some netting or muslin secured around the top of the jar.

Best ways to get sprouting
Sprouting is actually very easy, but some seeds and beans tend to sprout more easily than others. The easiest ones tend to be mung, lentil, fenugreek, chickpea (garbanzo) and quinoa. These are all quick to grow (quinoa takes just 24 hours, the others take 2- 3 days on average) and mastering the sprouting of these will help you get more confident about sprouting other seeds and beans that take longer to grow or are slightly more tricky.

Why Your Home & Raw Journey Are So Connected

From Successfully Raw Issue 90:

HomeThis week in Raw Passion (one of the coaching groups I am running) I shared how our home is incredibly important in our raw food journey, for a number of reasons, but often we just don’t realise it. And yet it’s really big stuff!

In this week’s article I am going to share with you some of the key points we looked at on our call, and at the end you’ll find an exciting Coaching Challenge! Note, this is only for those of you who are serious right now about upping your game, inside and/or out. So if this isn’t you then you might want to print this out and file it anyway, because when you’re ready you can dramatically fast-track yourself by taking the challenge on - and I think you’ll love it!

So, on with the mini teach-in:

In my raw food coaching model “Ongoing Support” (pictured),  YOUR HOME features bang in the middle of “The Seven Circles of Raw Support” series, as circle number four. This isn’t a coincidence. Our home is precious to us in so many ways, whether we are raw foodies or not, and it forms our safe haven from the rest of the world and physically speaking, becomes the centre of our Universe. However, the more raw you become the more you will notice, I’m sure, the more intense desire you have to get your home in order, in just about every way.

So why is this?

There’s a couple of main aspects here.

The first is that “as within so without”, which basically means that as you clean up your diet and body, you naturally feel the desire to make the same thing happen in your external world. It might start small scale with an increased desire to clean, move furniture, sort papers etc., but in no time at all you might find yourself radically de-junking your home, making big internal changes with furniture, organisation and/or decor, or even consider moving home completely.

This is so common that I hardly need ever ask anyone anymore if it’s happened to them!
The second reason is rather more subtle and I liken it to creating a “cocoon”. Just as a caterpillar spins a cocoon in order to turn to mush and then transform into a butterfly, we too on our raw food journey naturally are drawn to creating more peace, quiet and space for reflection and transformation, and sometimes much more – within our own four walls, our home.

As we do this we energetically and literally set the scene for these great changes to occur, and so it is that when you have a clean body AND a clean home space, some magic really can and does occur.

In fact, the more you look at this for yourself, the more you will probably realise that even when you are going well with your food you still might be holding yourself back by holding on to clutter in your home, because the Universe is guaranteed to bring you radical shifts when you clear both at once!

So, for those of you who are ready for this level of change, or if you would like to address your home and put your dietary shifts on the back burner, here follows my coaching challenge...
